Electronic correlations and transport in iron at Earth’s core conditions

TYC members Monica Pozzo and Dario Alfe, both from UCL, recently co-authored a paper published in Nature Communications: Electronic correlations and transport in iron at Earth’s core conditions

In it, the researchers evaluated the electrical and thermal conductivities of iron at the extreme conditions of the Earth inner core (temperature of about 6000 Kelvin, pressure of 360 GPa). The study particularly focused on determining the role of the electron-electron scattering (EES) in these transport properties.  Results on the behavior of EES in the regime of strong thermal disorder and the developed methodology represent an important advance in the theory of electron transport in general.
