THOMAS YOUNG CENTRE:
THE LONDON CENTRE FOR THEORY AND SIMULATION OF MATERIALS
Often described as a PhD+, the Engineering Doctorate is a four-year programme, designed to train research leaders to a high level and to give them industrial experience. The UCL Centre is run by the Chemistry Department, but the EngD students are registered in a range of departments, including Chemistry, Earth Sciences, Electronic and Electrical Engineering, Physics and Astronomy, and the London Centre for Nanotechnology.
The Centre provides training in the following key areas:
* Molecular modelling methods in materials science
* Professional development
* Project management
* Research methods and use of literature sources
* Various branches of materials science
The taught component is generally completed within the first two years, and during years 2 - 4 the student undertakes a PhD-level research project, normally at the site of the industrial sponsor.
Full details, including contacts, application procedure and structure of the course can be found on the web-site of the EngD Centre.
Before making a formal application, students are encouraged to make informal contact with the Director of the EngD Centre, Professor Nora de Leeuw (n.h.deleeuw@ucl.ac.uk).
