Magnetic monopole currents observed
My research is based at the London Centre of Nanotechnology (LCN) and I teach in the Chemistry Department. My main interest is in statistical mechanics, as investigated by neutron scattering on carefully chosen magnetic materials ("model magnets"). One of my better-known results is "spin ice" which I discovered with Mark Harris. This is a unique state of matter that occurs in rare earth oxides. I also have a long standing collaboration with Peter Holdsworth (ENS, Lyon) to study two dimensional magnets. We have recently been working with Andrea Taroni (UCL, moving to Uppsala) to classify phase transition in two dimensions.
