At the core of the business of Rolls-Royce is the management of risk associated with advanced structural materials. There is a growing recognition within the company that physically based modelling, of the kind undertaken in the TYC, may offer a much needed, deeper understanding of the materials on which its business depends, and their performance in service. Dave will set the scene for this double act by introducing the company and some of the challenges it faces.

Between September 2012 and February 2013 Adrian made 10 visits to Rolls-Royce in Derby and Rolls-Royce UTPs in Cambridge, Manchester and the Dalton Cumbria Facility. Through conversations with a range of senior engineers he was exposed to some of the company’s principal challenges concerning materials for aeroengines and nuclear power. These visits revealed a number of areas where members of the TYC could make a significant contribution that would benefit the company. Adrian will describe some of these areas.

This has been an exceptional and very exciting engagement between the TYC and the finest manufacturing company in the UK.
